1/32 Scale Trumpeter Mig-23 Flogger B - WIP
Right guys,
I am determined to do a full WIP on this model on here which again is another commission build. I am hoping to adopt some skills I have learnt on the MIG 21MF on this build (Oil Washes/Filters) to make it into a more grubby looking and well worked airframe. I will also try to get some photogrpahic "How to's" finished along with this build - something I have been really lacking in!
The recipient has asked for the following to be built
Trumpeter MIG 23 Flogger B
Finished in East German Camouflage
Complete with Aires Cockpit & Engine
The build itself should take my up to early December all being well and will be a good Christmas present for the commission builder
I have not managed to take any photos yet but the amount of plastic parts you get and the size is amazing. Plastic has already beencut from the sprues and some pics with follow later

Right,
Full of cold at the moment so not really had the time of inclination to get the big camera out - these were just taken on the Iphone to show you where we are to date.
The Cockpit has been sprayed and installed (needs to be matted down but can do that soon - I also need to spray the air intakes and then the whole front airframe can be glued... Not bad going considering I started this on Friday evening!
Ruler added to give you an idea of size

All,
Bit of an update with some proper photos this time.
The Engine/Burner can is the superb Aires conversion and was a bit fiddly to do, but looks a whole lot better than the kit alternative. I wanted to get a shot of the burner inside the can but was too scared to remove it once installed (It is three resin rings glued onto the tiniest bit of PE which alone took a good 30 mine to cut from the sprue!). The engine itself took 3 nights to complete, including thinning the walls of the kit fuselage to accept the can. The pasltic got so thin that it opened up the airbrake slots, so these are now glued shut!
The cockpit has now been fully glued in place and about 70g of nose weight has been added in place.
on with the pics
You will also notice a bit of filler around the intakes of this kit. Not the best fit here but a bit of Vallejo filler rubbed back with tamiya Thinners on a cotton bud works a treat and negates the need to even use any abrasives!
Primer coat to go on soon!

Exhaust looks extremely good, although the internal surfaces should be a Greenish colour due to the heat discolouring the metal something that is common to most Russian types, should be a simple fix with an opening that wide. Cockpit looks to be snug fit in the fuselage. Still can't believe the size of this kit.
Keep the good work up

Cheers Scott - how can I get a green tint inside the exhaust? Alclad clear green perhaps?
It is a massive kit but really nice to build...

I've never used Alcads so can't comment on them, but I'd be more inclined to spray the interior surfaces a light Olive Drab they were more a solid Green colour than a tinge of Green

WOW! There is a LOT of detail in this kit, especialy around the exhaust end. I have no idea how you would get the green tinge effect inside but thanks for the tip about rubbing down filler with thinners

Just realised I didn't answer your question. I would mix up a suitable Green colour along with a Metallic Bronze and Anthracite(that will be three different colours not all the same mix)
1/ Turn the pressure down on the compressor to about 8psi.
2/ Thin each paint accordingly, will probably be about a ratio 65/35 thinners to paint.
3/ Using Tamiya tape mask off the outer most set of internal petals and use Blu Tac to mask the "bullet" at the afterburner rings.
4/ Using a gentle pulsating method spray in short bursts to gradually build up the Green colour working your way around the inside of the exhaust. Vary the bursts so you end up with a patchy look rather than a solid colour finish.
5/ When you're happy with the Green, repeat the above using the Bronze but be more selective on the areas and intensity.
6/ Repeat again with the Anthracite, again reducing the intensity over the Bronze.
7/ Then go over it again with the Green but this time being very selective.
8/ You should now have a exhaust tube that is Green but with hints of Bronze and Anthracite showing through giving it that heated appearance.
9/ Dry brush the details using a Reddish Brown colour and finish off with Matt coat.

Re: 1/32 Scale Trumpeter Mig-23 Flogger B - WIP
Right progresss but no photos as I have just finished for the night
It has taken me the best part of 3 nights and a day to lay down the 4 tone camouflage, Alclad on the burner can area and the IFR bits/Nosecone too which leaves me with the undercarriage bays to complete and that should hopefully be the end of the painting for now. The undercarriage is also completed and weathered, and the missiles are also primed in Gloss white awaiting the decals.
So it is moving, but I have falied on photos so I am sorry - I do have good reasons for it, but cant disclose fully why - not just yet anyway!

Re: 1/32 Scale Trumpeter Mig-23 Flogger B - WIP
Right - Now I have an update - I must apologise but I did say I was going to throw a few techniques in this build but have failed, mainly due to its size and awkwardness to photograph but an element of timescales that are slowly building up on me. I have also glued the undercarrige on as the bays are virtualy completed and the undercarrige, made out of metal will give the model something to sit on
anyway on with the shots -
Next, tidying up the paint, maybe adding a little tonal varation to the scheme, gloss coat and decals

Looking impressive James, as you say a bit of post shading is required to take the contrast off and break the colours up a bit. I suppose that's one problem when you model in the "big boys" scale, with such large areas of colour things tend to look a bit saturated, although remember that when you Matt down the colours will lighten.
Look forward to seeing it completed.

Re: 1/32 Scale Trumpeter Mig-23 Flogger B - WIP
Cheers Scott,
I did apply a gloss coat to the upper surface this evening and left it to dry for a day or so; am hoping to add the decals and stencils to the upper surface in the week matt it down and then oil wash it after that. After looking at some of the panels this evening, Imight add some tonal variation before all this to break up the dark green and Brown as it is looking too solid.
Hope you all are well on here!
